The GR86 is expected in showrooms towards the end of 2021. The GR86 is a brand new model, but a spiritual successor to the GT86, continuing to be powered by a 4-cylinder boxer engine and rear-wheel drive. The GR86 has a naturally aspirated 2.4-litre engine, producing 228hp compared to its predecessor’s 2.0-litre unit which produced just over 200bhp. The up in power allows the GR86 to reach 62mph in 6.3 seconds, which is 1.1 seconds quicker than the previous model. 

The team from Toyota, Gazoo Racing, has tweaked and refined the GR86 chassis to give it true motorsport feel on the road, the same team behind the success at Le Mans as well as the GR Supra and GR Yaris road cars. 

Apart from the engine and chassis changes, the front gets a GR-Yaris-inspired front bumper, with a large grille and smaller side intakes. The rear sees some drastic styling changes compared to the outgoing GT86; the boot now features a ducktail spoiler and dark, more aggressively-curved tail lights. 

The GR86 makes use of aluminum for some of its body panels, reducing the overall vehicle weight whilst allowing the designers to create a chassis that is 50% stiffer. 

Inside the cabin there is seating for four, with the rear seats suitable for shorter journeys for adults. The driver is greeted with a 7" digital gauge cluster and an 8" infotainment system, equipped with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The base GR86 comes with a six-speaker system, increasing to eight on premium models.
