The hotly anticipated second instalment to the 80s box office movie Top Gun recently hit our screens. And while we’re eager to see what’s in store for Maverick alongside all the fighter jet action 36 years on, there were other ‘need for speed’ moments we were keen to appreciate – the cars.
If you watch the Super Bowl, you’ll already know one of the icons of the era was back for more action. This was, of course, Porsche, whose commercial hit the screens playing to the Top Gun theme song.
The caption – Porsche and Top Gun, together again – was an exciting preview for what’s in store. So, let’s delve a little deeper into the iconic models gracing our cinema screens…
1973 Porsche 911 S
If you cast your mind back to the original movie, Porsche made an appearance with its 356 Speedster driven by Kelly McGillis in the closing scenes. The connection to the new movie has the same vibe but instead with a 1970s 911 S coupe.
Here the audience sees Jennifer Connelly leaning on this iconic sports car. But for many enthusiasts, this isn’t just a sports car – it’s a model that set the bar for all others in the years after.
It’s said both actor Tom Cruise and director Joe Kosinski are big fans of the vehicle. Kosinski told GQ Magazine that he drives an old Porsche 911 and the 911 S was one of his dream cars. So, it was a natural choice for Penny to drive in the film.
Aston Martin DBR1
Many car fans were surprised to see the appearance of the Aston Martin DBR1. Primarily because of its hefty price tag and the confusion on how a Navy Captain could afford such a model.
That aside, the presence and status of the brand were a feature in this action-packed movie. And alongside fighter jets and other iconic counterparts, it was an eye-catching addition to the story. Of course, some queried whether the car in the film was, in fact, the real thing. But director Kosinski assured it was.
The DBR1 went into production in 1956 and was a model built for racing. It is one of the most famous cars to win the Le Mans 24 Hour Race in 1959 and held numerous championship titles in its day. However, the price tag was somewhat eye-watering, with the DBR1/1 selling at auction for £17.5 million back in August 2017.
The Top Gun: Maverick x Porsche collaboration
The presence of Porsche in the film was heavily anticipated due to the teaser video launched earlier this year. This clip took us back to the thrilling racing sequences and action that was to be expected of the movie. While not all the models featured are in the film, it set the scene for what was coming in the blockbuster.
Check them out below:
Porsche 911 GT3
Among the models were a few Porsche 911 GT3s drifting around a track. The promotional video gives a glimpse into the brand’s latest model. Its newest offering boasts a 4-litre flat-six engine delivering 503 bhp and 0-62 mph in 3.4 seconds.
Porsche Taycan
The Taycan was another model to feature. It’s said to be one of the most desirable electric cars on the market, and it’s not hard to see why. While it’s not a cheap option compared to other manufacturers, it has everything you’d expect, plus a little more from the luxury carmaker.
You don’t have to worry about performance either. The electric motor packs a punch with 0-60 in under three seconds from the best configuration. Range wise, the Performance Battery Plus option gives you up to 301 miles. The Porsche Taycan also provides a great driving experience alongside luxury and comfort.
Porsche 911 Targa
The new Porsche 911 Targa was also among the models in the teaser. This timeless classic has the innovative roof concept and the rollover bar characteristic of the 911. For performance, the twin-turbo flat size rear engine gives 450PS with a top speed of 189 mph and 0-62 mph in 3.8 seconds.
Porsche Mission R race car
If you blinked during the video, you might have missed it, but a glimpse of Porsche’s Mission R race car gave viewers an insight into the future of electric auto racing. The concept is based on the famous 911 and is powered by two electric motors making the car four-wheel drive. Together the motors pack an impressive 680hp in Race mode. Upping the ante, Qualifying mode takes the car to 1088hp.
At its concept launch in 2021, Porsche suggested that some of the elements of this race car might find a place in production models in the future. There may even be hints of this in the new Porsche 911 Hybrid set to arrive in 2023.
Porsche lease deals at Leasing Options
You don’t have to be an A-lister to get your hands on the latest Porsche 911. This iconic model is available to lease on a range of deals suited to your driving needs.
Popular models include the Carrera Cabriolet, Targa 4 and Turbo Coupe. There’s also the option of going all-electric with a Porsche Taycan lease deal.
There’s no doubt the performance and experience of driving a Porsche complements a blockbuster movie. But, they’re also ideal for luxury personal and business driving.
