The top 10 cars favoured by women in 2022

Favouring a certain brand and model of car has always been a topic of discussion between men and women.

Where you live, work and whether you have a family to ferry around will always be factors to consider when choosing a car, and it’s proven that women are increasingly taking an active interest in the cars they drive.

In fact, research conducted by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) in 2018 showed female car ownership had increased by 21% over a decade, hitting record levels of 11.8 million. There are more women purchasing cars than ever.

And a 2016 survey by mycarcheck.com revealed the top priority for women buying a car is the sale price, followed by its fuel efficiency.

As much as we don’t think there’s such a thing as a car that’s ‘for women’, there do tend to be some models that are more popular with female motorists than others.

The latest YouGov figures for Q4 of 2021 make for interesting reading, and here’s the top ten models favoured by women:

1. VW Golf (same with men)
2. Ford Fiesta (3 with men)
3. Ford Focus (4 with men)
4. Audi A3
5. VW Polo

A top five dominated by traditionally well-built and good value cars, it’s no surprise to see two VWs and two Fords in there.

The VW Golf tops the most popular car model for men and women, so it’s encouraging to see gender isn’t a factor when it comes to the UK’s most popular car model.

We’d argue the VW Golf is one of those rare family hatchbacks that manages to be both classless and impressively classy all at the same time.

It’s just fancy enough to compare to the likes of the BMW 1 Series or the Audi A3 – which comes in at number 4 – however, it’s priced in such a way that if you were looking at a slightly humbler option, such as a Ford Focus (in at number 3) then you could have both options on your shortlist.

6. Audi A1
7. Audi A6
8. Vauxhall Corsa
9. Audi TT
10. Land Rover Range Rover (9 with men)

Making up the rest of the top ten are three Audis to match the A3 in the top five, so it’s obvious the German manufacturer is well regarded by women choosing which car to drive.

It’s clear to see that both genders are making sure they get their needs met at a price they can afford when it comes to choosing cars.

This is one of the many reasons why leasing is becoming more popular with drivers of all genders across the UK.

It not only offers the option to switch up your model more often than you otherwise would – satisfying the more style-concerned among us – but also provides you with a broader range of options for your price range, something that’s always tempting for the practical among us.

Are you looking for the chart-topping VW Golf or the second place Ford Fiesta? Or maybe you’re after something completely different?
