Looks like the end of the road for the Audi TT!

Yes you heard right… the Audi TT – arguably one of the most iconic sports cars of the modern era – is being retired to the garage in the sky this year, after 25 years in production.

But if you’re already mourning the Audi TT, and wondering how you’ll cope without it, fear not! The German motor giant is manufacturing a special 'high-specified' Final Edition run of vehicles to bid farewell.

Despite the second and third generation TT models enjoying a sizable share of the sports car market, the brand's electrification plans means the TT will make way for a battery-powered replacement.

But in the meantime, let’s take a look back at this iconic car.

Where did it all begin?

We were first introduced to the Audi TT at the 1995 Frankfurt Motor Show as a concept.

It was only three years later when Audi’s prototype became a reality – the TT was put into production with only minor cosmetic alterations to the concept car displayed in Germany.

The very first TTs hit the road three years later in 1998.

It was an instant success thanks to its crisp design features and super-cool profile, becoming one of the most popular – and affordable – coupes and roadsters both in Britain and many other countries.

What makes the TT so iconic?

Its unique bulbous curves, sloped coupe roofline and wonderfully-sparse dashboard made the Audi an instant hit in the UK.

In fact, Brits purchased 2,672 Audi TTs in 2022, representing more than 33% of worldwide sales in that year.

You might’ve also spotted the Mk1 TT in a number of music videos in the late 90s and early 00s, including this from the year 2000:

Andrew Doyle, director at Audi UK, puts it better than we ever could, saying: “Few models have lasted the test of time as well as the Audi TT.

“The crisp, Bauhaus-inspired lines of the sports coupe look as fresh today as they did back in 1998 and to mark the model’s incredible success here in the UK our Final Edition combines everything our customers love about this iconic model.”

What makes the Final Edition so special?

The Audi TT Final Edition trim level will be available from March, with first deliveries expected from April. This last run is based on Audi’s existing third-generation model, which has been on sale in the UK since 2014.

The Final Edition features exclusive design touches and the highest level of standard equipment ever seen on a TT.

Setting it apart visually from the standard TT, Audi have installed its black styling pack with badging, door mirrors, exhaust tips and spoiler all finished in black. The drop-top TT Roadster also has black rollover hoops and wind diffuser.

Open up the doors and you’ll find an extended leather pack added as standard, with a steering wheel and seats upholstered in Alcantara leather – complete with red stitching – plus the red continues with piping on the floor mats.

You’ll have the choice of Tango Red, Glacier White and Chronos Grey metallic paint as standard – so we guess the final question is, which colour would you go for?
