Fetch - an app-based ride-hailing service - is planning to trial its remotely driven cars around the public roads of Milton Keynes in 2022. The project has government backing and funding via its 5G Create initiative, a technology it relies heavily upon.
The user hails a Fetch remote 'taxi' to its location via its mobile app. The taxi is driven by an operator to your location, using a steering wheel and screens - showing live camera feeds and vehicle data.
Data from the vehicle is transmitted over the superfast 5G network, with sufficient fail-safes in place during public trials.
Once the vehicle is with you, the scheme then allows the user to become the driver and you pilot the vehicle to your desired location. Cutting the taxi fare costs in comparison to services like Uber (if you have a driving licence that is).
By allowing the app user to drive the vehicle it allows the delivery operator to move another vehicle to its next user, freeing up manpower, allowing the reallocation of vehicles quicker in peak periods.
This type of technology could be used for fleet operations or rental companies allowing them to move a larger volume of vehicles to desired locations or return to more central locations.
