Introducing the New Tesla Model Y

Minimal style, impressive range and advanced technology are all things we’ve come to know and love about Tesla – and the Model Y is no exception.

This mid-size SUV is equipped with all the bells and whistles to go up against models such as the Audi e-tron and Mercedes EQB for premium appeal.

But, with the variety of all-electric SUVs popping up in the market, how does the Tesla Model Y stack up? Read on to find out more about this exciting model.

Exterior features

If you love the Model 3, you’ll probably love this even more. It’s based on the popular Tesla model but with larger proportions – it’s taller, longer and wider!

Like others in the range, its styling is minimal and sleek. Again, similar to the Model 3, there’s a slim intake within the bumper section. So no fancy grille or striking front features like you’d find on its rivals. However, that doesn’t mean it’s bland by any means. Instead, Tesla provides a subtle aesthetic to make way for the really impressive stuff underneath.

Interior features

As you’d expect, the interior follows the same minimalist concept as the exterior. It’s practically devoid of buttons, with everything controlled by the huge touchscreen on the dash.

Don’t worry about trying to find your car keys either. The Model Y is accessed via your phone. Plus, you can send an electronic key to others if you’re thinking about sharing it.

As this model is larger than the Model 3, it has more space for the driver and passengers. Head and legroom are good, and it seats three people comfortably in the back.

The Model Y is the perfect choice if you’re looking for ample boot space. It has not one but two boots. One in the back and a smaller storage space in the front - this is usually where the engine sits in a conventionally fuelled car.

Folding the seats down couldn’t be easier if you’re squeezing larger items in. Tesla has an electronic folding mechanism in all their models. So, there’s no fighting with annoying clips and buttons when making extra space. The front storage area also has enough room for a few shopping bags – or it’s an ideal spot for the charging cables.

Performance

Tesla is renowned for its peppy acceleration and impressive performance. But, let’s face it, any car that has something called Ludicrous Mode is worth taking for a spin.

You get the option of the Long Range or Performance version. Both do exactly what they say on the tin. Long Range gives you the best range between charges, while the Performance option is a hair-raising alternative. 0-60mph in 3.5 seconds is fast enough to impress even supercar fans. Alongside punchy acceleration, the handling is also ultra-responsive.

Electric economy

Tesla is often top of the class when it comes to battery range, and the Model Y is up there with the best of them. Tesla’s Long Range version provides up to 331 miles between charges. However, the Performance option comes in with up to 319 miles too, so there’s actually not much in it. Putting your foot down will deplete the battery faster, of course, which is more likely to happen when you have the Performance driving modes at the touch of a button.

Charging times are similar to other electric SUVs. At home, plugging in overnight will generally give it a full boost by the time you leave for work. However, finding your nearest Tesla ChargePoint speeds things up – with up to 80% charge in around 30 minutes*.

*Manufacturer’s WLTP figures and charge times are provisional.

Smart driver assistance technology

Tesla’s tech is where this car gets even more interesting. First, let’s start with a mention of its Summon Mode. That’s right, you can tell your car to meet you, for example, outside your house, so it’s ready to go.

Parking your Tesla is also a breeze. The 360-degree cameras optimise visibility. Plus, Tesla Vision is there to detect other cars and help you avoid potential collisions and squeeze into tight parking spaces.

Need to charge your phone? There are a few USB-C ports in the front and back. It also comes with wireless charging pads just below the infotainment screen.

Infotainment

As mentioned above, many of the car’s features are controlled by a massive touchscreen on the dashboard. This 15-inch intuitive landscape display handles everything from connecting your tunes to adjusting your door mirrors. It can take some getting used to. But everything is clearly laid out and responsive, which makes life easier.

What’s the Tesla Model Y like to drive?

With quick acceleration, all-wheel drive capability and state-of-the-art tech, all at the turn of a key (figuratively speaking), the Tesla Model Y is extremely fun to drive.

Its low centre of gravity creates responsive handling. Plus, with various driving modes, you can select a chilled driving experience to an immersive one in an instant.

Each aspect of the car is designed for comfort and, ultimately, a safe ride every time you get behind the wheel. In addition, the brand continues to provide innovative features and some of the most advanced tech in the market. So, it’s no surprise it’s a popular choice for all types of drivers.
