The New Toyota Aygo X Review

If you love driving a compact car but want a little more oomph from your ride, Toyota’s new Aygo X is a great option.

While it boasts the appeal of a small run-around, you have the added bonus of crossover styling that gives it a bold and striking road presence. This small but mighty car also has tons of cutting-edge tech, and opting for a higher-spec model brings a host of features. The fuel economy is pretty impressive too.

The Aygo X rivals alternatives such as the Fiat Panda 4x4 and Suzuki Ignis, and for its price, there’s a lot to love.

Want to know more about the Toyota Aygo X? Below, we check out the finer details:

Exterior features

The Aygo X has a distinctive look and is designed to stand out from its sibling, the Aygo. Crossover styling gives it an edgy aesthetic, and in the Air Edition trim level, you get a canvas roof as a cool addition.

This model is available in a variety of colours, and Toyota describes these as being inspired by spices and the spirit of adventure. There are five trim options to choose from – Pure, Edge, Exclusive, Air Edition and Undercover. As you move up the range, there are a few exterior additions too, including roof decals.

Interior features

Inside, the Aygo X brings drivers a comfortable and smart ride. To mirror the taller stance of the design, the driver has an elevated seat position to give you a greater view of the road ahead.

The upholstery and materials in the cabin have been designed well and are of good quality, albeit having some scratchy plastics. The exterior colour also transitions into the finish with pops of trim details and dashboard accents.

For its size, you might be surprised that the space you get is pretty reasonable, especially up front. Passengers in the back might feel a little snug, and the rear legroom is tight unless the front seats are set forward. But for kids, there’s ample room for the school run.

Boot space, as you’d expect, is on the small side. However, you get 231 litres of capacity and an extra 38 if you remove the parcel shelf. Moving up the trim levels also reduces this space if you opt for the JBL sound system.

Performance

In this model, you get one engine choice – a 1.0-litre three-cylinder petrol which pushes out a peppy 72hp. Alongside this, there’s also the option of manual or automatic transmission. But for a smoother ride, the manual is often a top choice.

Of course, this little car isn’t going to break any speed records, but it hits the 60 mark in around 14.8 seconds. Plus, the top speed hits 98mph, which is more than enough for UK roads.

The Aygo X is designed for city driving, and that’s where it fairs well. Its size makes it ideal for manoeuvring in windy streets and parking in tight spots. The car also has slimmer A-pillars, which creates better visibility. However, the blind spot is slightly compromised due to the small rear passenger windows.

While this model is a great city run-around, it doesn’t do too badly on the motorway either. The ride is pretty smooth, and while the fuel tank is on the small side, it makes travelling distances comfortable and easy. One drawback is the wind noise from the canvas roof on the Air Edition at higher speeds. But this it’s no issue if you’re mainly driving around urban areas.

Fuel economy

One of the best aspects of the Toyota Aygo X is its fuel economy. The car has a 35-litre fuel tank in both transmission variations, and the mpg is practically the same at around 56-58mpg.

This car has lower emissions and falls into a lower tax bracket. However, if you’re leasing, you won’t have to worry about road tax.

Smart driver assistance technology

You might be surprised that while this car is compact, it packs a punch in handy driver assistance and safety features. Each variant comes with Toyota’s Safety Sense technology. This means you get everything from autonomous emergency braking and land assistance to automatic high beam and road sign assistance. There’s also cruise control on all models.

Its size makes parking a breeze, but parking sensors and a rear camera also help with those awkward spaces (excluding the Pure model).

Safety-wise, you’re in good hands with the Aygo X. There’s six airbags in the vehicle, and it scored a four out of five rating from Euro NCAP.

Infotainment

On the dashboard, you’ll find a 7.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system in most models. This increases to a 9.0-inch screen in the top-spec variants. This system is easy to navigate and accommodates Apple CarPlay or Android Auto via the USB ports in the central console. In the Exclusive and Undercover trim, you get wireless integration instead.

What’s the Toyota Aygo X like to drive?

The Aygo X is a top contender if you’re looking for a compact urban driving experience. It fairs well against rivals in its class but has that added edge of crossover styling and striking road appeal.

Again, for the price, you get a lot of tech goodies, and driver assistance features as standard. Plus, the interior is well-built and comfortable.

Overall, there’s a lot to like about this model, particularly if you’re a fan of the standard Aygo.
